University of Illinois Bans Hoverboards

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — The University of Illinois' flagship campus is telling students not to bring hoverboards to school when they return from the holiday break.
Urbana-Champaign campus spokeswoman Robin Kaler said the two-wheeled scooters are banned in university housing and may eventually become contraband all over campus. A message sent to students says "Don't bring them to campus!"

Kaler said university administrators are crafting a policy for the campus and plan to have it finished by the time students return on Jan. 19.

University of Illinois-Chicago spokesman Bill Burton said that campus is also considering action.
At least 20 U.S. universities have banned or restricted hoverboards in recent weeks over concerns their batteries can catch on fire.

Elsewhere in Illinois, Illinois State University officials say they have no plans to restrict hoverboards.
